Before you become an SEO expert, I would recommend that you stay away from highly competitive keywords that perhaps hundreds or even thousands of others are competing for. Let’s make sure you win some smaller battles before you try to win the war, okay?

Example of high competition keywords – These are usually the high traffic keywords within a particular niche/market. As an example “cheap car Insurance” is a stiff market to compete in. Upon quick research at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com we see that it gets 1350 searches a day, and putting this search in Google with quotes around it we see there are over 4 million pages. Do the math, this means you would have to compete with 4 million+ other pages!

Example of low competition keywords – Now let’s say we decide to go for a low competition, low traffic keyword “buy female betta fish” which gets about 10 searches a day (according to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com). When we put in that phrase in quotes into google, we see that it only has 8 results! Now this is called a low-hanging fruit. These are always good, because it’s much easier to create a page specialized for this keyword and compete with 8 pages! For something with so little competition, if you would just create a page on your site, do some simple on-site/on-page SEO which probably takes about 10 minutes or work, you will very likely be able to rank in top three for this keyword, and you probably won’t even need to have more than one or two backlinks!

The “Low Hanging Fruit” Strategy – A possible strategy might be to find as many of these “low hanging fruit” keywords as possible within your chosen market(s). However these keywords may or may not exist, as others may be actively looking for these type of keywords as well and may have “picked” these fruits before you. Also, depending on how big the market is, these low hanging fruits altogether may not generate enough traffic for you to make enough money.

A more realistic strategy – Now, a more realistic strategy would be to pick a medium competitive, medium traffic keyword, and focus on dominating it. To do this, you would basically need to start with the quick 10-20 minute on-page optimization we referred to earlier, and then from that point on, you’d need to consistently build backlinks to this page. Keep building backlinks until your search ranking rise to a desirable level.
